Indian Rocks Beach, or IRB as it’s commonly referred to, is located in Pinellas County, Florida. It lies on a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway. It is north of Indian Shores and south of Belleair Shore and Belleair Beach.

• Indian Rocks Beach is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. 

• It has over 2 miles of beach along the Gulf of Mexico with 27 beach accesses.

• Indian Rocks Beach has a total area of 1.4 square miles of which 0.9 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles  (33.09%) is water.

• IRB is a quiet town of approximately 4,000.

• Tocobaga Indians visited Indian Rocks Beach as early as the 1500s and pioneer families came to settle Indian Rocks Beach in the early 1800s. 

• The abundance of sustaining fish and wildlife, the availability of fresh water from the natural mineral springs, and a climate suitable for agriculture made the area attractive to early settlers in the region.

• In 1883, four men sailed southward from Cedar Key, exploring the Gulf Coast in search of the ideal spot to settle. J. H. Hendrick and L. W. Hamlin would homestead in the place now known as Indian Rocks Beach. 

• The barrier island became “Tampa’s playground” when the Tampa & Gulf Coast Railroad built a spur from the big city to the beach in 1914. 

• The first Indian Rocks Bridge was built in 1916, and its location in the “Narrows” is indicated by a historical marker. 

• Indian Rocks Beach, Florida was developed in the early 1920s as a weekend getaway destination for the wealthy. 

• In the early 20th century all the roads on the beaches were composed of shell and sand, and some of them still exist today.

• Indian Rocks Beach has a 2020 population of 4,340 and is the 236th largest city in Florida. (source)
