The Animals of Florida: Pinellas County Wildlife Guide

Photo of a baby manatee: included in the Pinellas County wildlife guideFamilies are drawn to Florida for many reasons, from the pristine beaches to the world-famous Walt Disney World in Orlando. But, there is another side of Florida that appeals to families that love nature and learning about wildlife. Florida is teeming with wildlife, rounding up around 700 terrestrial animals, more than 1,000 marine fish, and 200 freshwater fish species.

Pinellas County is on the Florida Gulf Coast, where a wide variety of marine life and wading birds call our paradise home. Pinellas County wildlife includes manatees, alligators, bottlenose dolphins, armadillos, tortoises, and hundreds of migratory birds. Plumlee Gulf Beach Realty offers vacation rentals just minutes from the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary and fifteen minutes from the Alligator Wildlife & Discovery Center.

Alligators

With over one million alligators calling Florida home, it’s no surprise they are recognized as the official state reptile. These giant reptiles can grow up to 15 feet in length and live in freshwater environments like swamps and wetlands. Visit the Alligator Wildlife & Discovery Center to see these reptiles in person!

Bottlenose Dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins are a common sight in the waters surrounding Pinellas County. Dolphins are known to live in small social groups and have a wide range of vocalizations to communicate. With a lifespan of over 50 years, these intelligent creatures are best seen on boat cruises with local guides. Join Hubbard’s Marina for a dolphin tour or fishing trip!  Plumlee Vacation Rentals sells discounted tickets.

West Indian Manatees

West Indian Manatees are a rare sight in Pinellas County, but you may be lucky enough to spot one in our coastal waters. These gentle giants can weigh up to 1200 pounds and eat an impressive 100 pounds of vegetation daily! Since these mammals are endangered, we would appreciate anyone who spots one to call 727-464-4077.

Florida Birds

Florida is a heaven for bird watchers and enthusiasts! As you explore Pinellas County, look for American Oystercatchers, herons, egrets, pelicans, wood storks, and roseate spoonbill. The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores is an excellent place to see native birds and learn about conservation efforts. Find the Pinellas County birding checklist here.

Gopher Tortoise

Gopher tortoises are found in the upland habitats in Florida and require sandy soil to burrow into the ground. They average 9-11 inches with tan, brown, and gray coloration. They live from 40-60 years, and they are most often outside of their burrows during the summer months.
