PR: What You Need To Know About The Clearwater Super Boat Races

Are you ready for some of the largest and fastest powerboats in the world to take on the Gulf of Mexico waters? Then the annual Clearwater Super Boat National Championships are right up your alley. Tremendously powerful boats manned by competitive drivers in choppy gulf waters combine for unbelievably great action and this event is a local Gulf Coast favorite of both residents and visitors alike.

But that's not all you find. There is family-friendly fun to be had beyond just the races. You can view the super boats up-close-and-personal in the dry pits at Coachman Park, visit Baystar Race Village where there is live entertainment, music and food vendors, watch the Super Boat Parade, catch a fireworks display over Pier 60—and that's just the beginning of what you can find during this action-packed, high-speed event.

Ready to learn more? Here's what you need to know about the famed Super Boat Races in Clearwater Beach.

The Race Boats

Clearwater Super Boat Racing BoatSo, you may be wondering what kind of boats are entered in the Clearwater Super Boat Nationals. Good question!

Super Cats, Super V's, and Turbines in all classes compete in this event. Tremendously powerful boats manned by competitive drivers in choppy gulf waters combine for unbelievably great action. The boats are equipped with F-16 jet canopies. Race teams consist of a two-person team including a driver who controls the boat’s steering and a throttleman responsible for operating up to four engines capable of producing more than 6,000 horsepower.

Extreme speeds of up to 180mph and rough waters make it impossible for a single person to steer and operate the throttles. The best race teams hone the partnership between driver and throttleman down to a science, and incorporate the most advanced technology into their machines to generate optimum speed.

The boats fall into two categories for the Super Boat race: v-bottoms and catamarans. You can read everything you need to know about the racing boats here.

The Super Boat Race Course

Last year’s Clearwater races saw huge crowds turn out to Clearwater Beach, where an estimated 50,000 people on over 2,500 boats lined the beaches of the 2.5-mile-long race course. Beaches were lined 20 deep with beach-going spectators while others watched from the comfort of hotels, restaurants and condos along the beach. Crowds for last year’s event were estimated upwards of 90,000 with the total for the entire weekend surpassing 180,000!
