Plumlee Realty Celebrates 25 Years in Indian Rocks BeachHappy 25th anniversary to us! The month of July marks 25 years that Plumlee Gulf Beach Realty has been doing business in Indian Rocks Beach and enjoying every moment. It's hard to believe that 1990 is now 25 years ago, but that's when we first embarked on this real estate and vacation rental adventure. What a ride it's been! We are proud to call Indian Rocks Beach home for the last quarter century and happily service local residents and vacationers here on Florida's gorgeous Gulf Coast.
Want to know more about our humble beginnings and how we got started here in Indian Rocks Beach? Read on!
The Plumlee StoryPat Plumlee’s father, Jack Collins, was the business manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers who held spring training in Vero Beach, FL. On one of the trips to Florida he visited Clearwater Beach and fell in love with the area. He took an early retirement in 1953, moved the family from Rockville Centre, Long Island, NY to Clearwater, FL and partnered with a former baseball acquaintance, then a contractor. He built the Sands Point Motel on what was then the southern most point of Clearwater Beach. (There was no finger or Sand Key Bridge at that time.)
Pat graduated from Clearwater High School in 1958 and then attended St. Pete Junior College. As a fresh 21 year old, she obtained her FL Real Estate license and placed it with her parents, real estate company, Jack Collins Realty. Her first real estate deal was a memorable one due to the commission on the sale, not because it was so high, but because she gave it back. Pat felt sorry for the seller because he had a family and had lost his job. As you can imagine, this led to her mother/broker telling her that she's "just not cut out for the real estate game and better find another profession.” So she kept her license active but tried other avenues as well. She worked for WAZE Radio station, Stone Bolton Buick, and eventually Plumlee’s Plumbing Supply as the office manager. After a couple of years, she fell in love with the boss, Ernest Plumlee. After the wedding she hired her replacement and went to work as the Assistant Manager at East Bay Country Club, thinking that working together and being married might not work so well. Two years later and working up to the day, their first child Sandra was born.
At this same time Ernie sold his wholesale supply company and decided to start a new business, publishing a pricing catalog for plumbing, heating and cooling wholesalers and Customized Trade Price Service was born and lived in the third bedroom and eventually the converted garage of the house. Pat was the typesetter and took care of the books; there were two other employees as well. The business and the family grew over the next four years when their second child, Todd, was born. More space was needed.
The business moved to Highland Ave. and then to Calumet Street in Clearwater, where they were able to expand to have in-house printing of the price catalogs. After 25 years in publishing, the company with 25 employees, and servicing 42 states, the company now named Plumlee Systems was sold to Macmillian Publishing Company of New York, thus allowing Ernie to "retire," and enjoy boating and
However, Ernie remained a consultant for Macmillian over the next two years. During that time he met Wallace Weylie, an attorney, and together they found a property for sale and decided it would be the perfect "law/real estate office.” When Pat asked who would do the real estate, they said, "You of course!” That property was 417 1st Street, Indian Rocks Beach. This was 1990 and Pat’s mother had just retired and sold Jack Collins Realty on Indian Shores. Pat decided to give it a go and starting with a shared secretary and one salesman, Plumlee Gulf Beach Realty was born. It wasn’t long before the company was expanding, sales and property management. Ernie did the marketing for the company and attended all the travel shows to promote the business. Todd "came home” with his USF marketing degree and worked with his father in marketing and maintenance for a number of years before he was enticed away by the band Sister Hazel. Ernie passed away in 1994 and Todd moved to Gainesville where he built, grew and eventually sold a music merchandising company. Todd’s young family, wife Cris and son Tyson, returned to IRB, and Todd reactivated his Florida real estate license. He always wanted to live on Indian Rocks Beach and joined the family business. He has been there ever since; currently he is a Broker Associate and the General Manager of Plumlee Gulf Beach Realty. Todd’s wife, Cris, is one of the newest agents to join the firm.
As the business grew and opportunities presented themselves, adjacent properties were purchased, leading to the evolution of the campus you see today, which includes five buildings, parking lots and green space. There were ten years when Plumlee was a Century 21 franchise, but it was decided that was not the right fit, and they went back to Plumlee Gulf Beach Realty. Currently, there are 26 employees plus 47 agents working at Plumlee.
