Italian Street Fair, Shell Show & $5 Day at the Lowry Park Zoo on the Gulf Coast This Weekend

In many parts of the country it's cold, snowy, and well... it's typical winter weather. Why not trade the cold white stuff for some warm, white sandy beaches? Add in some sun and surf, and it's nice break from the winter blues. It's a wonderful time of year to be on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Have you planned your vacation in Indian Rocks Beach and Indian Shores yet? You should! There are always fun things to see and do here. Here are some of this week's highlights.

10th Annual San Gennaro Festa in Safety Harbor

Whether you are Italian or you love all things Italian, the San Gennaro Festa offers an Italian street festival located in beautiful Safety Harbor. Organized each year by The Italian-American Women of Today (LIADO), this popular street festival is a quintessential celebration of the Italian-American heritage.

In addition to your favorite Italian fare, enjoy a plethora of activities centered around Italian San Gennaro Festa 2tradition. Celebrate the national pastime of Italy by trying your hand at bocce ball. Indulge in the cannoli and meatball eating contests. Sample your favorite Italian breads. Enjoy pizzelle and pasta-making demonstrations. Help make some wine the old-fashioned way by stomping some grapes. Trace your Italian heritage at the genealogy booth. There's a little something for everyone. There are plenty of activities for the kids, too, including puppet shows, crafts, games and more.

San Gennaro Festa 3The streets are filled with Italian music, the spirit of Italy is in the air, and the festival welcomes visitors to join in the fun. The San Gennaro Festa is $5 per person (children age 12 and under are admitted free-of-charge). The festival begins Saturday, February 23 from 11a.m. to 8:30p.m. with a big fireworks display that evening beginning at 8:30p.m. and continues on Sunday, February 24 from to 7p.m. You can find the San Gennaro Festa schedule of events here.

66th Annual St. Pete Shell Club's "Treasures of the Sea" Shell Show in Seminole
Also occurring this weekend on February 23-24, the annual St. Pete Shell Show highlights the best of amateur exhibitors. Ribbons are awarded in an array of categories. The top awards include the National Museum of Natural History Award and the Conchologists of America Trophy. Other trophies include awards for Most Beautiful and Best Florida and Caribbean Exhibit. These exhibits truly highly the creativity of the exhibitors paired with the beSt. Pete Shell Showauty of nature's creations.

$5 Day at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa
Lowry Park ZooRated the Best Zoo in the U.S. by Parents Magazine, the Lowry Park Zoo offers $5 admission per person on Sunday, February 24 from 9:30a.m. to 5p.m. This is a quite a discount and makes for a busy day here at the zoo! Free extra parking is available that day next to the Tampa Greyhound Track and free shuttles are running continuously from that lot to the zoo between 9a.m. and 6p.m.
