2019 Coastal Decor and Design Trends You Need to Know
With each new year comes hot trends and new styles to modernize your home décor. What's in style this year and which looks can you incorporate into your beach home? We have some of the best home décor and design trends from top interior designers that are expected to be seen throughout 2019. We're highlighting the ones that we think work the best with coastal homes and beach house style. Here's what you need to know!
WHAT'S IN STYLE FOR 2019
When it comes to sustainability in your home decor, it's all about strategic, purposeful purchasing and timeless style. It's as much about who you're buying from as it is what you're buying. Buy those items from businesses you feel good about and ones who share your values and perspective. (Be sure to check out our favorite local home design and decor businesses at the end of this post!)
"Being strategic and purposeful about purchasing behavior is a key ingredient to a sustainable ethos. From the initial question of, 'Who you are purchasing from and what values do they stand for?' to 'What type of materials are used to build each item?' To complement and highlight special pieces, we believe in designing an impeccable foundation through the use of timeless materials, ultimately resulting in bones that evoke emotion whenever you're in your space."—Becky Shea
What is biophilia, you ask? Good question. It's a term that suggests humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. When it comes to home design and decor, it's basically bringing the natural, outside world inside your home.
“For 2019, there is greater interest in biophilia–emphasizing the relationship between humankind and nature, and the connections between the two. Natural, organic materials–such as wood floors, stone, and daylight and plant life–remind us of the exterior and brings the outside and nature, in. We are machine- and technology-driven society, but nostalgic about past processes and handiwork, so opportunities for custom Millwork and crafted materials are very important.”—Angie Lee of FXCollaborative
EDGY JEWEL TONES
Channel your inner mermaid this year and bring in some beautiful jewel tones into your rooms. Be bold! Don't be afraid to mix and match them or just focus on your favorite to add a pop of briliant color to any room. Jewel tones that will be popular this year include deep indigo, emerald green, dark teal, brilliant sapphire and bold ruby. Paired with a neutral or white background, you'll be on trend and in style in your beach home.
"Right now, I am loving deep, rich jewel tones with an edge. Bold indigo, hunter and emerald green, and dark teal all feel ready to have a moment outside of the kitchen. We’re layering living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms with paints, fabrics, accessories, and rugs in these colors to create drama against a backdrop of white architectural elements."— Jeff Andrews of Jeff Andrews Design
BOHO VIBE WITH A TWIST
The boho look always works well with a beach-style cottage or beach house. Eclectic pieces that work together in a variety of patterns and colors are signature of this style. This year, though, boho is combining the perfect elements of both vintage and modern in new ways. This year's look is a bit softer, cleaner and curvier for a comfy, cozy feel that's not too loud or busy.
"The boho vibe is back but with a vintage modern twist and curved lines. Layering and patterned fabrics is something you will see again, but this time around, they will be a bit cleaner and brighter. Curved furnishings and softer lines and mixing of modern and vintage is what we expect for 2019."— Dolores Suarez of Dekar Design
LIGHT COLORED FLOORS
If you've looked at new homes lately, you've noticed this trend! Homeowners of today crave a bright, open and airy feel to their space so lighter colored floors are one way to achieve that desired effect. Whether it's tile, laminate or hardwood flooring, you'll find lighter shades of gray, pale oak, and other white-washed wood tones are in demand this year.
"Light-colored floors are making a comeback, thanks to the homeowner's growing desire for a more airy and open look and feel. In shades of birch, beachy white and light oak, these floors reflect more light, and can transition from casual to luxurious, without sacrificing comfort."
90% WHITE, 10% COLOR
Speaking of light and bright, white is a your canvas this year. A majority of white in a room accented with smaller amounts of colors and textures is something you'll see in this year's interior design. It's already a common theme in many beach homes and cottages where white sets the stage for whatever colors you choose to accent with. The result is a light, airy, open feel that we all know and love. It just feels like the beach!
"There was a moment while I was watching the Spring/Summer Louis Vuitton show by Virgil Abloh that I though...'THIS is it!' I was inspired by how the collection was built on a foundation of white, but gently unfolded to embrace confident hues with bracing edge. The look was fresh, bold, and youthful. For recent project, I created a bedroom for a young lady that incorporated this trend. Tempered by neutral layers and tons of texture, it's a design that reflects this "of the moment" color recipe while staying true to the personality of the client."— Jon Call of Mr. Call Designs
Big art is big this year! You know what they say, go big or go home. Well in this instance you can go big and go home with your larger-than-life artwork in hand. Sometimes in life it's okay to be dramatic, and this is a perfect example. Find a piece of oversized artwork you love and find the perfect place in your home to showcase it.
"Don’t be afraid to mix colors, patterns and textures. Take a gallery wall to the next level by having it cover an entire wall, or add a dramatic, large-scale piece to your space. In this case, more is more.”—Sandra Chandler of Art.com
Who doesn't love beautifully handcrafted and handmade artwork or craft items? In our opinion, that is always in style. As mentioned earlier, sustainable materials are on trend this year. We totally support patronage of your local artists and crafters. Go ahead and stop by to see what they have to offer and don't be afraid to invest in some high quality, handmade pieces for your home. Check out our local galleries and shops at the end of this post for where to find amazing handcrafted pieces.
"Items made by hand using sustainable materials like jute, rice paper, and clay will be in, in 2019. We see people needing these grounding elements in their homes as a way to feel more in touch with the earth and their roots."— Kristen Peña of K Interiors
